Family Guidance offers families information, resources, referrals and personalized follow-up to help them implement their Custom Family Action Plan.  When needed, Family Guidance may also assist families in:

  • accessing certain resources and services
  • organizing and prioritizing needs
  • providing tips on communicating with organizations/service providers

Five strategies we use to help families achieve their goals in caring for their children are:

Information: we provide education about the resources available to families, referrals in the community as well as information about specific child conditions.

Advocacy: we provide education on laws and rights regarding special education and access to services.

Modeling: we help families contact service agencies, provide mediation and assist in organizing materials and records to request and access services.

Teaching self advocacy: we help families develop effective skills to communicate with professionals, encourage the use of documentation to manage services and advocate for needs, and help to facilitate shared decision making in their child’s care.

Support problem solving: we assist families with future planning, help them anticipate responses and prepare for secondary plans or options, and teach them techniques to make multi-level action plans for receiving services.
